Alcohol
Alcohol affects a portion of the corpus callosum which coordinates signals between the two hemispheres of the brain
Fetal alcohol syndrome: this is a syndrome caused by excessive consumption of alcohol by the mother during pregnancy and is characterized by the retardation of mental development and physical growth, particularly of the skull and face of the infant
Nicotine
Smoking causes a low birth rate in babies
Tobacco increases the risks of miscarriage, growth retardation, stillbirth, small head circumference, and sudden infant death
Caffeine
Large amounts of coffee throughout the day can lead to the risk of miscarriage
Marijuanna, Cocaine, and Methamphetamine
Heavy use of marijuanna can lead to birth defects, low birth weight, withdrawal-like symptoms at birth, and increased risk of attention disorders and learning problems later in life
Cocaine use can lead to spontaneous abortion, delayed growth, premature labour, low birth rate, impaired neurological development and birth defects
Methamphetamine can lead to low birth weight and restricted fetal growth
